Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that Imola is in the running to snatch the Italian grand prix from Monza.

As the F1 supremo's troubled talks with Monza organisers over a 2017 contract drag on, Imola chief Uberto Selvatico Estense said this week that the former San Marino GP venue Imola is "ready" to take over.

He had told La Repubblica newspaper that the only glitch was getting funds from the Italian automobile club Aci, who is arguing that Monza should be the recipient.

Ecclestone has now told reporters in Baku on Saturday that if the Aci is "not happy in Monza, and they want it in Imola, we are happy to support Imola".

  • How about taking turns? Worked for Germany for a long time, until Ecclestone decided to milk out Nürburg and kill of that race. By the way Bernie, thanks for that. *Sarchasm test complete*

I like that idea. Could do the same here in Canada with Montreal and Mosport, in the US with Texas and Watkins Glen. BUT no contracts beyond the end of this Concord Agreement ... that needs to be radically ratified.

    • Yeah, and they could also do so for the European GP, would enable e.g France to return. You might be correct about not giving out contracts after this agreement.

Frankly... The only french course living up to F1 standards would be Magny Cours, which is is a dead-arse-boring track - been there twice in the nineties. The only other option could be Bernie's own Paul Ricard track, which - as far as I know, but I may be wrong - isn't quite up to F1 criteria. The Bugatti circuit at LeMans doesn't really cut the mustard, does it??
But I'd really love to see Brands Hatch and/or Donnington Park or even Zandvoort in again. Tilke tracks ain't my cuppa....
