Franz Tost: "There are too many grands prix in Europe"

Toro Rosso Boss Franz Tost has gone against the general consensus by suggesting that less races in Europe are needed.

In the last decade, 10 new or returning races have been added to the calendar. Including Azerbaijan, four of those races were European and three of which will remain on the calendar next year. The European Grand Prix in Valencia was axed in 2012 after five years.

One of Liberty Media's promises when they came on board was to add more European races following an emphasis on Asian expansion. Since the Malaysian Grand Prix was added in 1999, seven new Asian races have made their way onto the calendar at one point or another.

However, Tost feels that going back to saturating the calendar with European races would be a bad move.

"I know I am speaking against my colleagues, but other destinations are needed," he said.

"We have to go to South Africa, we need more US races and should be in Argentina and India. For me, there are too many Grands Prix in Europe," said the Austrian.

The French Grand Prix will return in 2018 after what will have been an 10 year absence.
