2017 Ferrari engine to deliver 1000 bhp - reports

New reports are suggesting that Ferrari's 2017 engine could produce up to 1000 brake horsepower, figures of which haven't been seen since the 80's and the turbo specs that were used. 

The engineers have reportedly been designing the engine in a new direction in an attempt to match the speed of the dominant Mercedes.

Code-named '668', the car will be revealed on February 24, with a lot of emphasis being put into improving the internal combustion part of the system.

It is also rumoured that Ferrari have included a multi-jet ignition system engineered in partnership with the Mahle technology company, which is connected to the turbocharger to make better use of the MGU-H.

The team have also deigned a new gearbox, getting rid of the 2016 system where the rear suspension was situated between the differential and the gearbox.

2017 will mark ten years since a Ferrari driver last won the world championship (Kimi Raikkonen) so it is safe to say there will be a lot of pressure on the Italian team to perform, especially after a dismal 2016.

      Agree... I thought they were also at 1,000 hp already. So, maybe next year they'll reach 1,200?

    • Rivals approximate using novel acoustics methods but those are only as accurate as their assumptions that they feed into the simulations. No one but the respective teams know their respective real BHP peaks, a closely guarded secret.

      This is fairly straightforward to see why, acoustics only give hints of rpm and some cylinder, piston particulars. Rivals are not going to get specifics of fuel composition, let alone the actual details of gas expansion (combustion in IC) and other thermal dynamics. Such guess work involves kinematics but those who are familiar with this area know full well that such data is compiled without consideration of the masses of those objects nor the forces that may have caused the motion.

      For all we know no one has broken 930BHP. None of those figures out there are ever going to be properly verified. However even without raw figures it is possible for them to know if someone has the upper hand in the peak engine and sustained outputs which is what has led to the accepted notion that Mercedes have the best engine.

    • Very true, and BHP is generally lower than actual HP, so for all we know it might've been the entire Mercedes package, or maybe as you say it didnt break the 1000 barrier at all.
