Sauber has confirmed that Antonio Giovinazzi will remain in the cockpit for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix, as Pascal Wehrlein continues to recover from a back injury suffered at the Race of Champions.

Wehrlein rolled his car at the Race of Champions in January which set him back from intensive training for the 2017 Formula 1 season, in which the cars are physically tougher to drive due to the added downforce they possess.

Wehrlein decided to abort his weekend last time out in Australia as he deemed himself not fit enough to race, with Italian Giovinazzi replacing him. The 2016 GP2 runner-up finished his maiden Grand Prix in P12.

Wehrlein said: "For me the most important is that I can train intensively to ensure a 100% performance from my side as soon as possible. I will then be well-prepared for my first complete Grand Prix weekend for the Sauber F1 Team. Hopefully this can be in Bahrain but, if not, then we will take the time it needs until Russia to make sure I am completely ready."

boudy, Wehrlein is said to have a contract at Sauber. I can´t quite believe he still isn´t fit enough. I mean he was fit before his crash at ROC or wasn´t he?

No matter if Ferrari supplies engines or not...

Maybe Mercedes is not paying enough $$$ for Pascal?

Or maybe Sauber gets the new engine if they let Gio drive and will try to squeeze that engine into this years Sauber in mid season?
