Audi has ruled out racing in formula one, at least in the short term. Rumours Audi might be contemplating a foray were re-fired last week, when the Volkswagen brand was represented by Stefano Domenicali at the F1 engine meeting.
But Audi's motor racing chief Dieter Gass has now moved to calm the speculation. "Formula one is basically interesting and still the top class of motor sport," he told Germany's Sport Bild. "But if you look at motor sport as a whole, there are currently no series except Formula E and DTM in which Audi must be represented," Gass added.

Indeed. But that means we still have a few other VW brands to pick from.

I think it´s just a question of time with Formula E.
Remember Rallycross until 2012 or something. No one really cared. Since the new promoter is there it became huge and the spectator numbers are increasing. Even OEM´s are in there now with Ekström etc. Same sort of development is thinkable for Formula E. Racing there features already more overtaking etc as F1.. And let´s be honest: F1 is just too expensive, just 22 cars and nearly always the same winners for lets say 3 years is just boring and ridiculous or isn´t it?
I´m really a die hard F1 fan since the early 90´s with Prost, Senna, Mansell etc, but you have to face the future.. And look at the big OEM´s they are already canceling their combustion engines since they´re currently developing the last generation of combustion engines. -> This is just a fact for the case of Audi and VW. This is probably why they don´t want to go into F1, and if there is a Dieselgate or not doesn´t really matter in that concern. It´s just a welcome reason to say: "No we haven´t got the money, blabla."
PS: And yes, i´d really like to see Merc, Ferrari competing against Audi or Lamborghini or Bugatti. This would be great for the sport at least until there is some fuel to burn.. :-)
