Pirelli foresee one-stop strategy at Monaco

Pirelli is expecting this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix to be a one-stop race but still believes that strategy could play a key role. Teams will run with the three softest compounds this weekend - ultra soft, super soft and soft.

Last year, the race was won on a one-stop strategy, although it was a wet-to-dry event. Throughout the weekend, tyre wear wasn't an issue and with this year's tyres designed to degrade much slower, a one-stop is well and truly on the cards.

"The three softest compounds are the obvious choice for Monaco," said Pirelli's Head of Car Racing Mario Isola. "But there is still plenty of scope for strategic variation. Wear and degradation is so low that the teams can more or less choose whenever they would like to make their single pit stop from Ultra Soft to Super Soft, which should be the standard choice for the race.

"This is the first Grand Prix that the drivers have been able to select their own tyre allocations. As expected, the nominations have overwhelmingly favoured the Ultra Soft. This is the tyre that will be used the most in both qualifying and the race."

  • Does anyone actually enjoy watching the Monaco GP? I'm sure it's epic to drive but unless it's wet then it's a whole race of hoping someone will have a big crash. With the 2017 cars I think it's going to extra boring this year with 0 chances of an on track overtake.

    • I think it's great. At Monaco there's always the chance of a crash. true though, overtaking will be virtually impossible

    • I love watching Monaco's GP. Sure, its generally not the most eventful or exciting races, but its generally quite nice, and I enjoy the enviroment there, and the fact that none of the other races are quite like it, maybe apart from Singapore, but we are not sure if that race will stay.

    • Oh, and I also find the qualifying for this race to be one of the more exciting qualis on the calendar. You really notice how important Monaco's quali session is, the drivers really has to balance between pushing to get as close to the top as possible while staying out of trouble.
