Stroll "aiming to enjoy" home Grand Prix despite Q1 exit

Lance Stroll was left disappointed following qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. The 18-year-old will start tomorrow's race from seventeenth on the grid, barring any forthcoming penalties to himself or drivers around him.

Stroll was hoping to get nearer the top 10 in qualifying at a track that on paper suits the Williams. Indeed, Felipe Massa conjured up a lap that will see him start the race tomorrow from the third row of the grid. Stroll thinks that a strange decision to not pit him for fresh rubber may have cost him advancement out of Q1.

"We went out at the beginning and stayed on the same set of tyres the whole session," said Stroll. "I felt the grip was getting better, but I think the track was just improving. I think the decision not to pit for new tyres towards the end of Q1 had a bit to do with me not getting through, but it is too hard to say. You can always look back afterwards and say we should have done this and we should have done that, but we are in the position we are in."

Despite his low-lying position, Stroll is looking forward to his first ever home race and will hope to overtake a number of cars during the race: "Obviously, we are starting a little bit further back than we would want to, but it is a long race, overtaking is possible and you never know what will happen. We have to stay focused and positive. This is my first home Grand Prix, which is great and I am aiming to enjoy it."
