Lews Hamilton has explained the thumbs up he gave to Lance Stroll as he lapped him. On the start/finish straight, Hamilton was seen giving the Canadian a thumbs up on his way by, confusing many fans.

Originally, it was perceived as a 'thank you' for getting out of the way in an easy to pass spot, but Hamilton has confirmed that he was congratulating Stroll on his drive during the race, keeping in mind the tough critics that the 18-year-old has had to deal with.

"I know he's had such a difficult season," Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. "He's been dropped in the deep end, with critics and all those different things you have when you're 18 and you're experiencing them for the first time in Formula 1 – in one of the most difficult seasons. He looked like he was doing a good job, and I was just wanted to acknowledge that."

Obviously he is lying. How can a driver being lapped be doing a good job xD
He made the thumbs up gesture because Stroll moved to the dirty side of the track to let him past. It was clear at that moment.
