The Chinese Grand Prix has been on the calendar since 2004 but never has there been such interest until now to set up a Formula 1 team from the country. Recently, one group showed interest, but now a second has joined the running.

In the UK, Bronze Fortune Limited was renamed as China F1 Racing Team Limited in May, sparking speculation that a new team is set to join the grid. They also reportedly attended the Monaco Grand Prix and met with an FIA representative, requesting a place on the grid for 2018. However, they were told to take some time and conduct some important and detailed research, as a spot for next season was deemed unrealistic.

Meanwhile, a second group from China has been in contact with the FIA, reports Auto Motor und Sport. The Chinese investor is planning to join forces with a Spanish Formula 2 team and push towards Formula 1. It is not known which F2 team is in question, but Racing Engineering and Campos Racing are the only Spanish teams competing in the feeder category for F1.

  • Interesting! Who knows, by 2020 or 2021 we could have 24 cars again

Yeah, it's always fun and safe and all, when the last couple of cars are multiple seconds slower per lap than the slowest of the "old" teams.
If they want to be serious, they should follow in Haas' footsteps and get a "big" team to cooperate with them and sell them parts. Otherwise they'll never catch up.

I believe Brawn would like to have 13 teams on the grid eventually. I think that would be awesome, however, only if they are somewhat serious and competitive. In don't miss Manor in the least!

    • Well yes, he stated that a mere two or three days ago, and I agree that would be awesome, unless they are uncompetitive for more than two seasons.

  • Also, the fact that they thought they could get onto the grid for 2018 may suggest they have no idea what they're doing...
