Porsche have said they are not ruling out a potential move into Formula 1, days after confirming they are leaving LMP1 to focus on Formula E.

The German major can manufacturer made waves earlier this week by pulling out of the LMP1 class of the Le Mans race and instead focusing on Formula E, in the same week as rivals Mercedes, also pulled out of DTM to focus on Formula E.

It is a move that has been criticised by the Le Mans Promoters, Automobile club de l’ouest, for the abruptness of the move and hurting their event, but fascinatingly Porsche have said they intend to carry over the exact same team over to Formula E, including all mechanics and race drivers.

It has now been said that they are also interested in a potential move into F1, after attending a meeting to discuss the direction of the sport post 2020, in terms of its engine rules.

Porsche said on a potential move: "Alongside ventures in other racing series and the intensive preparation for Formula E, Porsche is examining other fields of application and development areas."

  • I'd be delighted if they were to return. But would they go for another partnership with TAG? If so, then it looks like yet another engine supplier could join the pursuit of Red Bull.
