Formula 2 championship leader is looking to secure a deal in Formula 1 for 2018, with Sauber looking as the most likely option. The 19-year-old is ripping apart the F2 championship and remains unbeaten in qualifying this year.
As a Ferrari junior driver, a deal with Sauber could be on the cards after the Swiss squad announced a multi-year deal with Ferrari as its engine suppliers. While Leclerc is happy with the speculation about his future in F1, he wants to take it all one step at a time.
"In my career I have always taken it step by step, so now I am trying to win the Formula 2 title and then I would like to go to F1," he told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper. "The big dream is to wear red and I hope that one day it will become reality. But I also think of everything, as long as it is F1."
Leclerc was then asked, as an F1 team boss, would he sign himself up for 2018 "I would because I feel ready. Would I be willing to wait another year? I would prefer no, because if I win the F2 championship I cannot defend the title, so waiting would not help me."

I don´t get that. I think he outperforms Ericsson again and again thus he deserves to stay

Why would Sauber keep WEH...no seat available for him next year.
He will probably end up driving in FE.

Orchide:
Because Wehrlein scored the points for Sauber and not Ericsson?!
From a performances point of view Wehrlein outpaced Ericsson and not the other way round.

Yes, he has scored the points. WEH is obviously faster in qualifying but ERI is quicker in the races.
Why would Sauber keep WEH as he is a merc driver. Almost every driver on the grid has to bring money, sponsors etc. Sauber will not keep WEH if Merc doesn't pay. Ocon is their first choice so the chances for WEH are not that good.

Wehrlein is IMO a much more skilful driver than Ericsson. I've never seen a rookie make so many mistakes as Ericsson. BTW in Qualifying it's right now 8:2 for Wehlein against Ericsson. But unfortunately in F1 money rules, so Ericsson is more likely to stay.
