Honda still pushing for 2017 upgrades

Amidst many rumours about the future of Honda in F1, with questions of whether McLaren will stick with the Japanese outfit, whether Toro Rosso will take on Honda engines, and other such questions, Honda still maintain it is committed to delivering the best engines possible.

The new and improved spec 3 engine that has been introduced in recent races, has brought a welcome improvement in terms of both reliability and performance, propelling McLaren to their first double points finish of the season, and only a second ever fastest lap since they renewed their partnership in the 2015 season. This increase in performance may just about be enough to save what has been a tumultuous relationship so far with a decision due to come in september.

The upcoming decision has had Honda under pressure to deliver the promised upgrades, and prove they can produce a competitive engine for the future. The decision from McLaren is due just days after the spec 4 engine will be introduced, which is said to be bringing an additional 15 horsepower to the table. It is said there will also be an additional  40 along the way, which will just about half the engine deficit to the likes of Mercedes, and are seemingly intent on helping McLaren all the way to a world championship.

McLaren themselves have been sceptical, with one source saying: “i don't know if this is the end of the big reliability problems, you never can be sure." Eric Boullier has also said on the latest upgrade: "We will see if Honda gives us another evolution after the summer. We need it,” showing that McLaren are still not convinced of Honda’s ability to produce a competitive engine.
