Lewis Hamilton admits that he would like to know how Michael Schumacher is doing following his skiing accident in 2013. Schumacher was with his family in the Alps when the accident occurred. The German was in a coma for some time before it was reported he was no longer in that state.

However, the extent of the seven-time world champion's injury has never been revealed and Schumacher has not been in the public eye since his accident. Hamilton, who surpassed his qualifying record at the weekend, wants to know how he's doing: "For everything he did for the sport and raising the bar, to be able to raise that bar once more is an honour," he said. "I would love to speak to his wife and see how things are. Time will tell."

Hamilton took the lead of the championship for the first time this year on Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix, as he crossed the line in first followed by teammate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton's victory meant it was the first back-to-back win of 2017, and the Brit is delighted with the result.

"This is obviously an incredibly exciting season; the last two races have been really strong for us as a team. The way things have come together in the second half of the season is exceptional. The car felt fantastic, particularly on that first stint. As we had a bit of breathing room behind us, it was easier for us to extend the life of the tyres. Valtteri did a fantastic job to get through and get this one-two. It is amazing to have the first back-to-back wins in a long, long time and claim the lead in the championship."

I think Lewis has a point. Whilst I certainly don't advocate full media access, surely some minimal and carefully controlled news is reasonable. After all Michael is genuinely loved by 100,000's fans around the world who supported him both emotionally and financially. For his family to totally deny them any of the news they crave seems, to me, cruel and ungrateful.

allthough your last sentence seems to imply it but no one is entitled to something (info) that does his own. The 100.000s of fans you speak of were supportive of his carreer and his achievements. Schumacher has always been very strict on keep the public figure separated from the private figure. What is wrong with accepting that?

If the care, interest is genuine people will think about him at times and wish him well. all the rest is to satisfy a curiosity that does not go hand in hand with integrity

    • Do tell me, how is it cruel and ungrateful? Yes, he has many fans, me included (I was 5 and lived in Germany at the height of his career). But to demand from a family that we must know how he is? That is unreasonable. Let them be silent. Besides, if they havent told us anything new, its likely that his condition is the same. Do you really need more than that?

How Michael is fairing, is none of Hamilton's business...........
Hamilton is just a prat and says this stuff to create headlines and to get people and the press to think he is a nice caring guy - we all know he is not!

  • Part of me wants to know, but part of me doesn't.
If he's making some recovery that would be superb to know, but if he's in a really bad way (as most of us suspect) confirmation of that would be incredibly sad and upsetting.
I sometimes wonder if that fall had been fatal, maybe he would have been saved from so much pain and suffering. :(

Michael Schumacher became a public figure because of his racing. Racing that cost £100 of million of pounds which came, in the final instance, from the public.
I am not demanding anything, I merely reflect that to refuse to answer the question 'how is Michael?' which so many people who love him are asking is, I think, is causing a lot of people pain or at least extra sadness.
