Pirelli chief Marco Tronchetti Provera says he hopes the top three teams are closer together in 2018. From the point of view of the tyres, the Italian said he is happy with the season. "I praise my men because they did a lot of work and I think the drivers had fun," Pirelli's chief executive told Rai radio. "The tyres played an important role and that's a source of pride."
Turning to 2018, Tronchetti Provera said: "Next year there will be a new very soft tyre but the tyres will generally be softer. However, I hope formula one finds a healthy competition between Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. The category remains the king of motor sport, and the audience is still strong, but some races were not particularly exciting," he added.
As for Ferrari's season, he said it was a tale of "two parts". "The first was extremely competitive but the second was a very unlucky Ferrari with a few matters of reliability that changed the championship," said the Italian. As for Ferrari's post-2020 quit threat, Tronchetti Privera said: "Ferrari and F1 are an inseparable combination." (GMM)

Maybe if the teams had tires that lasted more than a few laps the excitement level would have gone up.

And maybe, Pirelli, it would've helped, Pirelli, if you had produced functional tyres that could actually be used in a competitive fashion and wasnt hard as diamond and brittle as biscuits, Pirelli.

Pirelli is the problem here.
tires that degrade quickly and only have a small thermo working temp to turn on max grip gives all the advantages to teams who know what those windows are and how to keep tires in that window.
having 3-5 temp sensors per tire is not ideal if F1's goal is to give control and driveability to the drivers, infact it promoting engineers.
Pirelli needs to go, F1 needs a tire war. WE dont need 5 compounds of qualifing tires.
this is the MAJOR problem in F1, a Tire supplier trying to control races.
Please liberty, fans need 2 things, AN F1 STREAM subscription to entire weekends including F2 with access to all previous F1 races, we will pay for this service.
Secondly, terminate the Perelli contract or open the tire competition so teams can bring in their own manufacturer and develop their own tires suitable to their own cars and drivers and ditch the thermo limits of all tires.

Wider tires are also very likely to make wake turbulence issue worse. Teams are trying to control real tire drag with front wing vortex generators. The vortex generators basically great a strong turbulence that affects following cards heavily. Also wider tires create a bit larger turbulence on then own but I would assume that effect is minimal.
I wonder how much narrower tyres would improve racing. Tyres from around 2000 had much reduced contact surface area because of grooves. Slick tyres with similar surface are would be much narrower than current tyres.
But I still suspect teams would like to use vortext generators for ground effect. The turbulent vortex helps prevent high pressure air from around car going to low pressure space under the car.
