Kubica clocks in 100 laps in Abu Dhabi

As he hopes to arrive back in Formula 1 on a full-time contract, Robert Kubica lapped the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi 100 times on Tuesday. The Pole was taken part in a post-season test with Williams, as he hopes to become Felipe Massa's replacement for next year.

Kubica's comeback gained attention earlier this year when he completed a number of private tests with Renault before taking part in the in-season test at the Hungaroring. Kubica's F1 career was cut short in 2011 when he was involved in a life-threatening rally crash.

While a comeback with Renault seemed on the cards, the team opted to run with Carlos Sainz for next year, which left Kubica eyeing the Williams seat. It is believed that he is the favourite to get the drive, with chief technical officer Paddy Lowe pushing for the deal to be done.

Kubica clocked in 100 laps before handing the car over to Lance Stroll. The 32-year-old is scheduled to drive the FW40 again tomorrow for half of the day, with Russian Sergey Sirotkin getting behind the wheel also on Wednesday.

Hope he makes it. Such a pro I think he would be a great teammate for Stroll.

  • He is not going to get it on merit. Not with that speed. Williams might use him for PR, which is another story entirely.

As I understand he was the only one on supersofts, while everybody else, including Stroll, was on super-duper-hyper-mega-ultra softs - If that is the case 1.5 seconds behind Stroll is very impressive, considering he isn't that familiar with the car.

Paddy said that Kubica had a lot of fuel on last stints and yes Kubica was only one on softs (he did only one lap on supersofts because he got a puncture)

All the more impressive then, if it was on softs.

    • If he did drive that lap heavy on fuel and with a soft set then thats not bad. I'll admit I dont put too much into lap times in tests unless we can compare them with average race times. Im more interested in that he again could pull off 100 laps.
