Brawn wants 2021 engine regulations to interest independent supplier

Ross Brawn has said that a key factor of the 2021 engine regulations must be that they attract independent engine suppliers. Formula 1 will run with new engines in 2021, with the proposed rules already presented to current and interested manufacturers.

The present regulations have seen plenty of criticism, with many complaining about the noise they produce. Teams have also been suffering from the cost of the power units, while fans have often described them as being too complex.

Aston Martin is one manufacturer that is rumoured to be interested in entering F1 in 2021. Liberty Media outlined that the engines must become cheaper, nosier and less complicated, and Brawn has now added that attracting independent manufacturers is vital.

"The 2021 engines have to be more economical, cheaper and make more noise,” Brawn said to Sky Sports F1. "They have to be regulations that an independent engine supplier could manufacturer. We’re not saying we’ll get an independent engine supplier but there has to be the technical specification that enables an independent supplier to join.

"I think that is a really important barometer because if we achieve that it means we’ve put the engine in the right place both technically and economically. An engine today just on its own is £1m, and that is just to buy the engine, it doesn’t include the development or design and the other things that go on. That is far too expensive. We need to drive down that cost to make it more economical."
