Former Red Bull and Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat has joined Ferrari as a development driver. The Russian was once a highly rated prospect and has scored two podiums in his career but had been on a downward spiral seemingly since his demotion from Red Bull early in the 2016 season and was eventually sacked by the Toro Rosso team last year.
At only 23 this could be a lifeline for Kvyat who could potentially revive his career at Ferrari if he impresses as a development driver, with the potential of seats at Haas or Sauber available through their youth system.

Not a bad way to keep busy, if you can't get a race seat. Glad he's sticking around.

Did not see that coming. But good for him.

So I guess that's Ferrari's way of making sure Verstappen doesn't win more races - Red Bull won't be able to demote Kvyat more.

I think this is a good move for all parties. Kvyat gets to stay in F1 with hands on a top contender ( I hope ?.) Ferrari gets a useful R&D benchmark who could readily step into a race car if Kimi has a lacklustre early season. Lastly, Kvyat will be well placed to step into a resurgent Sauber Alfa Romeo if that all works out.
I like Daniel Kvyat and thought Red Bull / Marko treated him shabbily. That said, even Marko said Kvyat deserved another chance in F1, but I suspect he did not see that bring at Maranello.

Good for him. I wonder if Ferrari just got a bargain of a #2 driver when Raikkonen inevitably gets kicked out for underperforming.

So you're saying they would replace him with a driver demoted 3 times for... underperforming... ?

@ENDR You're right, it's highly unlikely because Ferrari doesn't really care about bargaining on drivers. That being said, I still think Kvyat is for some reason rated highly by many on the paddock.

Hopefully, he goes further than JEV did.

Seb is probably very happy now having Torpedo at his side. Damn the Torpedoes :)

There goes Ferrari's 2018 season before it even started.
