F1 is heading for trademark trouble after launching its new official logo. Some fans were dismayed late last season when Liberty Media revealed that it is replacing the sport's iconic 'flying F' logo of the Bernie Ecclestone era.

But also dismayed is the stationary company 3M, according to F1 business journalist Christian Sylt. He wrote in the Telegraph that the new F1 logo "bears a striking resemblance" to an existing 'F' logo already registered by 3M for a brand of compression tights.

A 3M spokesman said: "We have not had any discussions about the logo with the other party. We are looking into this matter further." (GMM)

I hate the new logo, it doesn't have any redeeming qualities as far as I'm concerned, so I hope they lose.

    • I dont hate it, but I just dont see how its an improvement. 'sides, it looks like r1, not F1, and the font for the text isnt very nice.

To me it looks like something you'd see on a bootleg F1 video game for the Amiga 500 in the early nineties.
You're right, it does look like r1, and while the F is made out to look like a corner, the 1 looks like a dead end to that corner.
I think it's only made worse by the fact that it's a solid colour, because the design itself is very bulky, for the lack of a better word.

    • Right? I sorta get the logo, but they need to polish it quite a bit more.

    • I am also reminded of computer games when I see this logo. It belongs in the corner of a game box, and nowhere else.

The new ugly logo, the halo, no grid girls, 6 compunds of tires, and no German GP ...where are we heading? :-)

    • Am I really the only one who dont care about the grid girls going or staying at all? Also, we have a German GP this year, We'll have one every second year, assuming Hockenheim manages to stay on track.

I agree with Freguz. Add to that the horrible engine sound as well as the allocation of engines. I'd love for an alternative to come around, but unless Ferrari makes good on their threats, it doesn't seem likely.

    • Replace the logo, if the halo works they should keep it, I dont care what they do with the grid girls, fewer compounds are certainly a benefit (but so is ditching Pirelli), the F1 grid should be able to afford 4 allocations each, and I dont mind the sound (I personally like the sound of the Honda and Ferrari cars). But if the next season gets too bad, I do at least have Super GT to fall back on.

I checked some Super GT clips out on YouTube a few months. I absolutely loved the sound, and it seems like a cool series, so I'll probably watch a few races.
I think I may have watched my last Formula E grand prix for the foreseeable future this weekend, after 3-4 laps I tapped out. Soo boring.

    • I'd dare say Super GT is by far one of the more interesting current series. Also, Button will race there this season, so we Button fans have that to look forward to.

I've promised myself that I need to watch a few FE races this year to at least give it a fair shot, but from what I've seen and heard, that series aint for me.

Come to think of it, I didnt watch a single DTM race last year. Huh. I really used to like DTM, but for some reason, I got really tired of it during 2016, and only watched the last races due to habit.

    • Super GT punished succesful teams with handicap weights thought, that turns me off.

    • Yes, but the handicap system is generally not very significant Those who dominated this year dominated even with the handicap system being in full swing. Also, the GT500 cars are mostly handicapped by fuel flow.

I just don't get why they're messing with things that don't need messing with, like the logo. Concentrate on the steak and not the peas.

  • Always amazed how during the off season everyone bitches about the stupidest things because there is nothing to talk about. If you don't like F1 go somewhere else, plain and simple.
