Lando Norris says he is prepared to leave McLaren if the British team has no place for him within a year or so. This year, McLaren will line up with an unchanged driver pairing of Fernando Alonso alongside Stoffel Vandoorne.

But youngster Norris, the new reigning F3 champion, steps up into the reserve role for 2018. About his future, he said: "You could say it depends on what he (Alonso) does. So we'll have to wait to see what Fernando wants to do because I think they (McLaren) are also happy with Vandoorne," Norris, 18, is quoted by Marca sports newspaper.

The young Briton will combine his McLaren role with Formula 2 this year. "I can develop a lot and definitely improve as a driver in 2018," Norris said.

"Obviously my goal is to be at McLaren but if I cannot get a place here, then I'll have to look for other opportunities. If they tell me there will be no place for three years then it's obvious that I'll have to go somewhere else, but if it's only a year, I think I'll continue with McLaren," he added. (GMM)

I am a HUGE fan of Alonso's and I honestly have no idea whom will I support when he leaves.

That said, I do believe he needs to leave F1, given he hasn't got a "winning machinery" and there are really, really slim chances he ever again will.
He has had his chances and he has squandered them. It's time he backs out while he is still on a high or he risks tarnishing his reputation of being one of the greats (in greater public), since he has earned that reputation based on skill as he didn't win all the trophies he (undoubtedly) deserved.

It's time for younger drivers to enter F1 and give it a go.

So his future doesn't depend at all on getting results in F2?

  • I am biased because I'm a big fan of Alonso. However, I don't agree with people suggesting he should retire to give a chance to youngsters... Please. No real promising talent has ever been kept out of F1. Furthermore, if we're talking about old guys making room for the young ones, at least talk about the old guys that bring no excitement to the grid. Alonso, whether you like him or not, is one of the few proper characters on the grid. Lando is godo enough that McLaren will have to give him a seat or loan him out like Red Bull or Mercedes have done. I am not worried about truly talented youngsters.

    • Im so tired of people saying "let the youngsters have a go!". It was the same with Button. The guy had at least two years of F1 left in him, yet Sky and other pundits talked about him as if he was an old work horse ready to meet mr. shotgun behind the shed. F1 chases little boys like priests caught with their pants down. Let the vets stay if they can still race.
