Toro Rosso debuts first car of Honda era

Toro Rosso have debuted its new challenger for the 2018 season. The STR13, which was set to debut to the public next Monday, made its debut at a wet Misano track and then quickly released its first official image on twitter to the public.

The car featured Toro Rosso's version of the Halo at the Italian track, and was piloted by Brendon Hartley, who is set to be one of the teams two main drivers, alongside Pierre Gasly.

Toro Rosso will be hoping for its new engine manufacturer, Honda, to have an upturn in fortune this season after three disappointing seasons with McLaren, failing to guide the Woking marque to a single podium in its time together. However with significantly less pressure with Toro Rosso, Honda are expected to improve steadily this season with Honda.

    • No problems! it'll do 7-8 laps (although five of them on the back of the breakdown truck!) lol

      The Honda powered cars will do more laps per engine than the Renault powered cars on Monday. Book it!

    • I dont really mind what its doing here, as long as its doing well in Melbourne. Boy I will grin until my face rips in half if that unit proves superior to the Renault PU... I suppose that story wouldnt be as captivating as the other stories about how the Joker got his scarrrs, but I'll take it!

  • It looks good, but I wished they had given us more clear pictures of the car. At least a close up. But I like that they retained last year's livery, its really cool.

    That bloody halo is just ruining what is arguably the best looking car on the grid. That being said the new RB14 looks pretty dope as well in its “special editions livery. Now we just need Honda to silence the incessant critics.

    Looks like they ditched the Mercedes style nose for the nub that everyone else is running. Looks a bit like a McLaren nose.

    • I was thinking the same thing! I preferred the looks of the Mercedes nose, but I guess they had good reasons to change from it.

    how big is the air box scoop!

    is there ram air effect to try get some speed out of it?

    ‘Ram air’ is only really relevant to naturally aspirated engines, not turbos. However, these hybrid units have complex cooling needs for things like the energy recovering Motor Generating Units like the ‘K’ (Kinetic, braking etc) and ‘H’ (waste heat from turbocharger etc) and it is the ‘H’ that is the most troublesome part of the hybrid motor and demands most of the cooling. The ‘Energy Store’ (battery packs) get hot too. There are also complex CPU’s which need their share of fresh air for cooling. Water radiators & some electronics will be cooled via side pod intakes.

      I should add that it seems there has been a general reduction in the size of side pods this year, so it’s possible that the extra sized main scoop has taken over some of the fresh air cooling duties from the side pods. That’s just a guess though. There is some very complex engineering under those painted covers!
