Alonso to Ferrari rumour swirls in Monaco

Fernando Alonso could be plotting a potential return to Ferrari for 2019.

While the Spaniard seems happy at McLaren, he has not won a race since leaving Ferrari at the end of 2014.

Now a rumour is swirling in the Monaco paddock that, last time out at Barcelona, Alonso's management supremo Flavio Briatore lined up a meeting with Ferrari.

Alonso's current McLaren contract is believed to have 'out' clauses at the end of each season.

"I think our situation is the same as everyone's," McLaren executive Zak Brown said at Monaco when asked about Alonso's future.

"We're all talking to our drivers, and probably talking to each other's drivers to a certain extent up and down the pitlane," he added.

"We're now back in Europe, and it's usually around the summertime that things start really taking shape as far as our conversations with Fernando. I think he'll let us know what he wants to do pretty soon," said Brown.

This rumor was started by spanish media. It’s wishful thinking on their part. It’s more likely that mclaren starts up an indycar team and Alonso starts racing there instead. No way will Vettel allow Alonso at Ferrari, just like Hamilton wont allow Alonso at Mercedes.

  • I call bullshit. Vettel wont have him there, and Im not sure Alonso can swallow his pride and return to the prancing horse. The move is about as likely as I am to win at the lottery, Im afraid.

That is my gut reaction too, on both counts. But I'm not so sure how much power Vettel's yielding at this point. Vettel haven't delivered as well as expected (and I'm saying this as a huge Vettel fan) and I would suggest Maranello may be getting a little impatient and perhaps desperate. So I could sort of see them roll the dice on Alonso once more, consequences be damned. But I do think it's a long shot at best.

    • I think Vettel has delivered in terms of possible pace, the shortcomings are probably more down to poor strategy from Ferrari, and suboptimal car performance in Barcelona. But Vettel still have a lot of say in choice of drivers, sadly (this coming from another Vettel fan). I hope they'd get something better along, but at this rate I dont think it'll be Alonso, and in a sense I sorta hope they will prioritize someone like Ricciardo over him.

Nice to see the drivers conference, and Vettel said to hamilton nice ideal about them driving at lemans or something ;p

Some dont get on with others as team mates, doesnt mean they dont speak away from the grid.

The key here is riccy boy and can redbull keep him, or not. if ferrari dont get him do they keep with kimi, which vettel is happy with, or bring in a young sauber driver. and save the money.

Think Indy is more likely in an orange car ;p

Nah Fernando. I don't see it. I think we'd see him first Renault or someone else before him going back to Ferrari.

    • The day he leaves McLaren, McLaren will be race winners... Nah, jokes aside they likely wont be, but the Alonso curse do seem to be a thing. :)

Jeez, I'd love to see that happen - one last swing of the bat - he'd batter Vettel in equal machinery though the harmony would disappear in an instant. How desperate are Ferrari for the constructors? By Sept we'll have a clearer view on the likely destination for the constructors, if Ferrari are not looking favourites, then Alonso I think becomes more a reality - box office - most famous team - it would be explosive. I for one would like to see that.
