Carlos Sainz Jr. ended the Monaco Grand Prix in 10th place. However, the Spaniard wasn't the happiest driver after the race ended. Although he brought a valuable point for Renault, Sainz Jr. felt "very bitter" after what he called a "disaster of a race."
Sainz Jr. believes he and the team made a mistake by opting to pit in for ultrasofts instead of supersofts and feels that the choice ruined his chances to obtain a better result today. The Spaniard pitted on lap 15 of 17 for ultrasofts. Therefore he covered more than fifty laps on Pirelli's second softest tyre compound.
"[Scoring just a point feels] very bad, very bitter. I think the race was a bit of a disaster from the start. Even though I was saving the tyres, the fronts degraded a lot. We don't know why and it's something we need to pay attention to." Sainz Jr. told Movistar shortly after the race ended. "And then the decision to switch to the ultrasofts on lap 15 was not the most appropriate." he ended.
Carlos Sainz Jr. currently stands ninth in the Drivers Championship with 20 points in the first six race of the 2018 season. His teammate, Nico Hulkenberg finished the Monaco Grand Prix eight and has the same position in the Drivers Championship.
