Esteban Gutierrez says he is trying to get back onto the F1 grid.
The Mexican lost his Haas seat after the 2016 season, and since then has made appearances in Formula E and Indycar.
But he was back in the F1 paddock last weekend, appearing in Mercedes team gear at Silverstone. The world champions confirmed that Gutierrez, 26, is a team simulator driver.
"I am on a long term project with them and doing everything I can to contribute to the success of the team," he is quoted by France's Auto Hebdo.
Gutierrez admitted that he has not yet given up on his F1 racing career.
"My goal is to get back to F1 and I'm doing a lot of work to get there," he said.

Im not sure if he was all that bad back when he was in F1, but is there really any point to return now? But then again, can he be worse than Stroll and Sirotkin?

Don't think it was just lack of luck. Very similar situation as in GRO is having this year. Can't see him coming back ... he was really never there...
Try and impress in a different series.

I think the difference is that Grosjean can show occasional flashes of brilliance. Gutierrez didn't really have terrible moments, but he had no highlights either. Quite frankly I don't know how he made it to F1 in the first place. He did have a pretty good GP2 season in 2012, but it was against the weakest crop ever. None of the drivers from 2012 are in F1. None of the made a significant impact in F1.
