Daniel Ricciardo will be demoted five places on the grid for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix, the FIA has confirmed. Ricciardo has had a new turbo fitted to his car for the weekend and took to the end of the pitlane nine minutes before the start of FP1 to be the first out on the circuit and confirm the penalty.

The change comes in response to Ricciardo's DNF last time out in Mexico. The Australian was holding off Sebastian Vettel for second place but was forced to end his race early with an issue, which resulted in his eighth retirement of the season.

It marks the first time the Ricciardo has used a sixth power unit element this year, which has resulted in a five-place drop rather than 10 places, which would have been the case last year. But following a revision in the rules,  the first breach of the seasonal allowance for the individual element now means a 10-place drop.
