Honda partners with IHI to boost turbo development

Honda has announced a partnership with Japanese company IHI to boost its turbo development. Next season it will provide power units to Red bull after an overall succussful 2018 campaign with its junior squad Toro Rosso.
Honda has struggled to get up to speed in Formula 1, re-entering the sport in 2015 with McLaren. It has worked with IHI in that time already, but this new deal includes a full technology partnership which aims to boost the efficiency of the power unit ahead of the 2019 season.
We are happy to enter into this partnership with Honda, one of the best engine manufacturers in the world," said Yoshinori Kawasaki, vice president of Industrial Systems & General-Purpose Machinery Business Area at IHI Corporation.
"Through this new technical partnership, our aim is for the Honda PU to deliver the best possible performance, by accelerating development of the turbocharger. We hope that as from the 2019 season, Honda's power unit, using the IHI turbocharger, will deliver the sort of performance that thrilled motorsport fans back in the 80s and 90s."
Honda's Katsuhide Moriyama added: "IHI is well established in the field of rotating machinery technology which it has developed through its shipbuilding and steam turbine business, which was established back in the 19th century. We expect this partnership to produce a notable step up in performance. Together, we will keep pushing to fight for wins."

I think this is good. I'll admit I have little reference to IHI, but from their resume, they seem to be among the best at this kinda thing, so it makes sense to hire them.

Honda themselves. Currently, all of the Honda PU is more or less in-house, with some degree of competence (dunno which) from outside the base.

IMO after 8 years with a turbo compressor housing manufacturer I think doing that in house would be a little like reinventing the wheel. Got a foot in the door to supply IHI but never it never opened beyond that. This could be key for them to get that all important power boost.

Yes Honda is working hard, reputation and honor are very important for them. Max is ready for 2019 and hot shot, model, vegan, non drinking, talk, talk on replay Hamilton is already trashing Max when he can, he knows Max is coming.
