Planning for new Finnish Grand Prix gains momentum

It is understood that AKK Motorsport, Finland's motorsport governing body, is to undergo a feasibility study in the interest of possibly posting a Finnish Grand Prix. The governing body is also said to be looking for help and support from the country's Ministry of Education and Culture for the idea.

Despite former champions Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen all hailing from the country, Finland has never actually hosted a Grand Prix, however particular interest has recently come about due to the news that a round of the MotoGP will be hosted in Finland in 2020 at the Kymiring, which is situated about 160km from Helsinki.

Finland is known for hosting it's round of the World Rally Championship each year, a renowned event known to attract spectators from across the world annually. The Kymiring is only a new circuit, after its official opening in 2018. Aside from F1 and MotoGP, it has also been reported that the circuit is looking at potential hosting of rounds of the DTM and WTCR respectively.

Lehmuskaillo further added: "The study will provide us detailed knowledge on what motor racing competition at the highest level truly demands and that will help us tremendously when staging other racing events, too.”
