Sebastian Vettel has taken his first pole position of the 2019 season, beating Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton to the top spot.

Vettel's pole lap marks Ferrari's second of the year, following Charles Leclerc's achievement in Bahrain earlier this year.

Arguably the star of qualifying was Daniel Ricciardo, who managed to position his Renault in fourth place for the start of Sunday's race alongside the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Valtteri Bottas spun his Mercedes W10 on his first hot lap in Q3 at Turn 2, and struggled the second time around to set the sixth fastest lap, behind the Red Bull of Pierre Gasly. 

Magnussen crashes, knocks Verstappen out

Kevin Magnussen had a hefty collision with the barriers on the start-finish straight in Q2, which brought out the red flag in the final moments. 

At the time of the crash, Verstappen was outside the top ten as his hot lap on the medium tyre was not enough to see him through to Q3.

When Magnussen crashed, Verstappen was behind the Dane which prevented him from improving his time. The crash also ensured that the second Haas of Romain Grosjean was eliminated, as was the Toro Rosso duo and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Hulkenberg beats both McLarens

Daniel Ricciardo suggested on Friday that McLaren was the pick of the midfield in Canada, however, Nico Hulkenberg's lap, which put him P7, was enough to ensure that both Renaults got ahead of the Woking squad.

McLaren got both of its cars inside the top ten, with Lando Norris getting the better of Carlos Sainz who had an issue on his final lap.

Magnussen got through to Q3 despite his crash in Q2, but is likely to take a penalty should Haas replace his gearbox or potentially the chassis if there is substantial damage.

Racing Point fails to impress

Racing Point saw both of its cars drop out in Q1, with less than a tenth separating Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez.

Stroll got out in the session after his engine failure this morning which resulted in Mercedes changing his engine back to the old-spec that was used at the first six races of the season.

Williams once again rounded out the field, as George Russell out-qualified teammate Robert Kubica by seven-tenths.
