Vettel affirms he 'must do better' in 2020

Sebastian Vettel states that he is aware that he "must" perform stronger in 2020 in order to mount a consistent challenge at the front of the field.

The 2019 campaign has been a struggle for the German and his Ferrari team, who won just three races this season.

Vettel took one of the race wins, taking his lowest victory tally since he joined the team bar 2016, when he didn't claim a single race win.

At the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Vettel crossed the line in fifth place after performing a late-race move on Alexander Albon - but was in low spirits after the chequered flag when asked about his season.

"I would like to go into my room and get changed but I have to answer your questions first. This is how I feel," Vettel said. I am honest.

"We didn't have the year that we were hoping for. I think the reasons are clear and the lessons are clear and its for us to take it onboard.

"As a team need to perform stronger, and as an individual, I must do better. I can do better. So, it wasn't a great year from myself."

Vettel added that he doesn't believe that year was as bad as its looks but says that Ferrari must also work to produce a car that's capable of challenging Mercedes and Red Bull in 2020.

"I don't think it was as bad as it looks," Vettel said. "But I am the first person to look at myself. Hopefully, we can make the step forward and we can get a stronger package to fight with Mercedes and Red Bull."
