Axcil Jefferies has today (Thursday) confirmed he will join the 2012 FIA Formula Two Championship line up, beginning with rounds five and six this weekend at the Nűrburgring.
The 18-year-old from Zimbabwe first sampled the JPH1B F2 car during pre-season testing at Silverstone earlier this year, showing strong pace from the off and ending an impressive 10th fastest overall.
Before this he made his single seater debut in 2009 after two successful years in karting, finishing third in the Formula BMW Pacific championship with two wins and six podiums. After a second season in Formula BMW, he was forced to take a step back from racing but is confident the equality of Formula Two provides the perfect environment in which to make his return.
Jefferies said: "It's taken a lot of hard work but it's great that it's all paid off and we can go racing. I've got a lot to learn after missing the first couple of rounds and I've also not been to the Nűrburgring before, but we've got two sessions to learn the track and I'm confident that I can build on my pre-season pace and finish in the top 10."
Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Chief Executive, added: "I am delighted Axcil will be joining the F2 grid at the Nürburgring. He is one of only a few driving talents to emerge from Africa, and only the second driver from the continent to race in F2. Missing the first two events of the season will not make his race debut easy, but judging from his testing performance I expect Axcil to get up to speed pretty quickly."
