Ferrari rewards European champion with Formula 1 test

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is pleased to announce the creation of a new international series, the FIA European Formula 3 Championship. This was ratified by the World Motor Sport Council in Milan on March 9th, 2012.

The championship will replace the existing FIA Formula 3 Trophy and is intended to become the foundation for the development and progression of aspiring and gifted young drivers, establishing a clear path all the way to F1.

The need for such a restructuring of the F3 series has been fully endorsed by the FIA and by the leading European countries engaged in developing and running motor sport series. Thus the FIA European Formula 3 Championship will be strongly supported this season and in the years ahead.

The existing sporting and technical regulations of the FIA F3 Trophy will be retained for foreseeable future. Three very important and relevant prizes will be on offer at the end of the season, in line with the federation’s wish to develop talent in motor sport, and added evidence that the motor sport community are firmly behind this exciting new championship.

The winner of the new F3 series will become F3 European Champion and will be offered a test in a Ferrari F1 car, as well as two days’ testing in F2. The second-placed driver will also have the chance to test an F2 car over two days, as well as drive a DTM touring car. The third placed competitor will be able to test an F2 car over two days.

The 2012 FIA European Formula 3 Championship calendar will cover 10 events and will start in Hockenheim (Ger), on April 29.
