Formula E could see the introduction of a support fully electric touring car series in the future, and could be introduced as soon as the 2018/19 season. The series already has had a number of different events in support of the series, such as the fully automated Roborace series and did play host to a race between fully electric Volkswagen golf's at the start of this season in Hong Kong.

This proposal however would see a permanent addition to the series, to be run in the three hours gap between the end of qualifying and the beginning of the race, permitting that the schedule will allow it to happen. It is understood that an announcement on the series could come as soon as October.

FIA president Jean Todt has often spoke of his love of the series, and has now said that they are looking to aid the progression of the racing by introducing a feeder series, in the mould of touring cars. it is not yet clear whether it would be a one make series or multi make at this point however.

Todt said on the matter: "We're discussing and studying the introduction of the electric car in other categories of motorsport and I feel it would be a good idea to introduce a second race during the race weekend. I think there is a space to maybe introduce a different discipline as a support race."

  • Lets be honest here: FE is nowhere near ready for a touring car series. Touring cars require longevity and endurance, and electric cars lack either.

I think they reached my limit of interest (which wasn't huge to begin with). Now it will be like milk floats racing around in total silence! Sorry, not for me and a gimmick at best.
