Scott Dixon claimed pole for the Honda Indy Toronto on his final qualifying lap, ousting Penske driver Helio Castroneves by less than four hundredths of a second.
The Chip Ganassi Racing driver's fastest time mean that for the first time since May's Indianapolis 500, and only the second time this season, a Penske entry didn't start from pole position.
Penske did however occupy three of the top five places, with Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud, and Will Power qualifying second, third, and fourth respectively.
Former Formula One driver Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top five ahead of James Hinchcliffe, Conor Daly, and Josef Newgarden.
Juan Pablo Montoya and Mikhail Aleshin completed the top five, with the returning Luca Filippi in eleventh.
Former F1 drivers Max Chilton, Alexander Rossi, and Takuma Sato qualified in 14th, 19th, and 20th respectively.
