Ed Jones has won the 2016 Indy Lights drivers' championship after finishing fourth at the final round at Laguna Seca as American Zach Veach took his third win of the season.
The Dubai-born driver looked set to miss out on the title to Santiago Urrutia until his Carlin team mate Felix Serralles moved aside on the last lap, handing him the position that gave him enough points to clinch the title. Urrutia finished the race in second place.
Despite the contentious manner of his title win, Jones insisted he knew nothing of an order for Serralles to move aside.
"I have no recognition of team orders; whatever happened on the last lap happened to Felix," he said. "I don't know what happened there. I was racing my own race, and I came out in fourth and got the championship."
Jones' title triumph was the first championship win for Carlin since they made their début in American motorsports last season. Jones will now receive $1 million towards a 2017 IndyCar drive and an entry into next year's Indy 500, as well as at least two more races.
