Wolff: "Lance Stroll more mature than Verstappen"

Lance Stroll, a Williams development driver, has caught the eye of Mercedes' team boss Toto Wolff. Canadian teen Stroll is currently leading the highly-competitive European F3 season, combining that race seat with a role at Williams.

The 17-year-old said this week that he is eyeing the reportedly expiring contracts of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, but he may not have known that Wolff also has an eye on him.

"He works extremely hard," Wolff said of Stroll, "but his intelligence and maturity is something else as well."

Wolff said that when it comes to Stroll, he is even more impressed with his maturity level than he is with F1 sensation Max Verstappen's -- who is a year older.

"Max behaves more like a youngster," Wolff told La Presse newspaper.

"Max is a teenager. In the car he is extremely good, but when you are with him, he's a boy. But Lance's maturity is surprising at just 17 years old."

Wolff, referring to Lance's billionaire father Lawrence, also told the Canadian newspaper The Star: "I think for this is the next Canadian kid in formula one and it has nothing to do with his father's wealth.

"It is because the boy can drive."

Being more mature than Verstappen is not difficult.

And this words are coming from a mature person,I think that max is mature anought to write better replys than you because you are talking like a child of 8 years old.toto is a bad loser because he did want him and now it's over for him,he needs the millions from daddy's stroll.

    • Toto wont get any millions from Stroll, he has cut ties with Williams, and Stroll is a potential future Williams driver. As for Max's maturity: I havent forgotten Australia.

    • While he isnt a Button, Vettel is hardly immature. As for Alonso, he is a bit too confident, but he has reason to be, being 2 times champion and all that. Neither has acted the way Max did towards the team in Australia, and he did honestly not have a reason to do so since Sainz was faster.

    • Danster, did you read my comment or was I unclear? I'll try again: Verstappen was slower than Sainz, not by much, but enough, at the given time I described in Australia, so why yell and swear at the team? Did I say Sainz has been faster otherwise? No. No point in mixing that in here then. And name one occasion as of late in which Vettel has directed undeserved criticism towards Ferrari as of late, because I fail to remember one. As you say Alonso did yell at McLaren last year, but then again he drove a car with a disappointing engine, so it wasnt completely uncalled for. Not defending him, but I can sort of understand him. I dont know if you've read any of my other comments at all, but Im neither a mindless Maxlover or Maxhater. I hope I was clear enough this time.

Give me the page please were you have the drive times that Sainz was faster? Because what we all have seen here Verstappen was faster. Sainz is a jealous boy and admitted only he hold up Verstappen because the NO of Max in Singapore. He yelled and sweared at the team because there were already a lot of problems overthere. I am sure that you know what Marko said, lots of tensions at Torro Rosso with engineers fighting and that Tost was more favouring the outclassed Sainz. With Vettel you right, he never yells at Ferrari, i would not do either if i earn 42 million, but you must admit he is Always yelling at other drivers. As you say Alonso was right, i like Alonso, also when he sat down in the grass with his sunglasses and watch the race on a chair, think you remember that 1 also. So why you can understand Alonso but not a 18 year old guy who has the feeling his team is not backing him anymore because intern fights with engineers? And no i did not any of your comments, i only made an account yesterday just to react on that Elmo here down below. And i do think you must admit that everything what Max do is under a big glass, part of jealousy, i guess, also the comparasing with Ric everytime now, a superb driver, 26 years old, way more experience and drive a long time at Red Bull already. Lots of people hates the success of a 18 year old boy, now it's Max, soon it's someone else. Only 2/10 behind him yesterday in his 3e race in the new car and like elmo down below wanna compare him then with kvyat, who is even outclassed now through Sainz.

    • I actually didnt read that, Toro Rosso told Verstappen that Sainz was faster over team radio so they couldnt force Sainz to let Verstappen past, so your best bet is to find a replay of the race on Youtube. Maybe there is an article on it but I dont think I've read one, so sorry I cannot be more helpful. I of course understand there was alot of tension in Toro Rosso, not fond of how Red Bull treat their drivers, but there is tension everywhere in F1, its part of the whole thing. I agree that Vettel can be a bit vocal on some drivers, not often, but it happens, and mostly they deserve it, some dont (e.g Kvyat in China), but sadly most drivers are (Grosjean is a sad example of that). Hehe yeah I remember those times. I see your point, and perhaps I should take that more into consideration. Im not fond of the pressure Red Bull put on their drivers, but I still dont think it was very nice move of Verstappen, and the Singapore move wasnt very nice either. He'll mature, of course he will, but he need to be careful so he wont repeat stuff like that again (he hasnt if memory serves me, but labrats do have bad memory...we also have a bad memory ;). Well, media is media, and they have to enlargen things to ridiculous proportions, be is success or failure. Its not fair to compare him to Ricciardo yet, but there is bound to be such comparisons. He seems better than Kvyat for sure, but I'll make an opinion on Verstappen in Red Bull at the end of the season so I get the whole picture. I dont care if they are young or old, as long as they do a good job.

I don't care if Hamilton parties with Bieber. I don't care if Verstappen still behaves as a teenager. I care what they show on the track.

yup, talking is on the track. And again today Verstappen shoved hes no better at qualifying than Kvyiat. 3/10s off DR. So the more reason for him to behave and not act like hes WC material. At least he didnt crash today, so thats progress.!

Elm green did you look to teletubbies or f1,Sainz is faster than kyvat and max was faster than sainz,in point and in qualification, ofcourse Ricciardo is faster, it shouldn't be normal if he isn't faster because he is driving this car for already more than 2 years, danster you have right i think a lot of people are very jealous.

Ooh my, did i step on someones toes. Se all the Verstappen fanboys are out defending the poor boy. Im not saying MV is a bad driver, just saying, if u wanna act like WC material, you need to proove more than hes done, so maybe he SHOULD let the talking be done on the racetrack and act a bit humble when he crashes. And @Danster u seriously need to work out how to behave aswell. Im surprised your comment wasnt deleted already. Were disussing F1 here. Whether im fat or not or over/under 40 is hardly relevant to state my opininion. And also u need to learn the meaning of the word jealous.

wow, theres no stopping you Danster.. Keep it comming. Yeah he makes alot of overtakes, but when you get one in twenty wrong and end up crashing, you need evaluate if its worth it. Besides hes been driving F1 cars for over a year now, so if he was that fast he would have been closer to Ricciardo in Q. It sure wasnt a problem for Vandoorne to beat Button on his first qualifying in F1..! Only reason he won in Barcelona was becuase DR´s got bend over by the pit!! EOD

ELMGREEN So please explain how Verstappen is acting like WC? Where have you heard him claiming to be? Oh right, you can't because he didn't. There's a lot more nonsense coming out of you but I wouldn't even know where to start.

if you want to compare the 2 drivers :
    Max verstappen : www.driverdb.com/drivers/max-verstappen/
    Lance Stroll : www.driverdb.com/drivers/lance-stroll/

I think this is saying enough.
Max is a way beter driver overall.
