Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that Mercedes could make a move for Fernando Alonso amidst increasing tension between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Alonso, who has been mostly positive about the struggling McLaren Honda project, has yet to score a podium finish since his return to the team last year, and a move to Mercedes could see the 34-year-old have one last chance at a third Formula One title.
Mercedes, meanwhile, made their admiration for the former Ferrari driver clear during last weekend's British Grand Prix, praising his car control in a message on their Twitter page.
How did @alo_oficial keep that car rolling?!

Some absolutely mega car control on display out there right now... we are LOVING this! #F1
Alonso's current McLaren contract expires in 2017 while Rosberg is currently in talks to extend his Mercedes deal which is believed to expire at the end of this season. Lewis Hamilton is tied to the Anglo-German team until the end of 2018.
Boullier expects Alonso to remain
Despite the Mercedes speculation, McLaren racing director Eric Boullier expects Alonso to remain with the woking team.
"Yes, of course," he insisted when asked if he would like the Spaniard to re-sign with McLaren. "I really believe in the project and I see our progress."
"McLaren is ready, and as soon as we have the total package, we will be at the top," he continued. "For sure. And I hope it's with Fernando, of course."
Alluding to Alonso's other possible decision, to leave F1 entirely, Boullier said he thinks Alonso will continue and become a champion again.
"I don't think Fernando is ready to retire," said the Frenchman. "I am sure that if he trusts the McLaren-Honda project he will end up champion again."

Ahh, another day with La Gazetta japping their mouth. Whats next? Mercedes to strap fireworks on the rear wing? Verstappen to get cake from Ecclestone?
