NIco Rosberg lead opening practice for this weekend's Malaysia Grand Prix, beating team mate Lewis Hamilton by half a second.
The Mercedes pair headed the Ferrari duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, with Fernando Alonso completing the top five.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen were sixth and seventh, while Nico Hulkenberg, Sergio Perez, and Jenson Button rounded out the top ten.
Alonso's position offered Honda some early encouragement with the Spaniard running Honda's latest power unit, however, neither of the Red Bull or Force India drivers, nor his team mate Button ran the soft tyre.
Daniil Kvyat was 11th, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and the Haas duo of Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez.
Carlos Sainz was 15th fastest, with Sauber's Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson in 16th and 17.
Felipe Massa, Jolyon Palmer, and Manor's Esteban Ocon and Pascal Wehrlein completed the field.
The beginning of the session was marred by a dramatic fire for Kevin Magnussen, which left the Dane unable to set a time during the session.
