Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff has admitted that the German marque is interested in signing Fernando Alonso.
The Silver Arrows are currently looking for a replacement for Nico Rosberg after he announced he would be retiring following his championship triumph last month.
Almost immediately, a host of names were linked with his seat - one of which was Alonso
"You have to consider Fernando," Wolff told Sky Sports. "He is a driver I respect a lot. He combines talent, speed and experience. It's all there."
"He [Alonso] is in a contract with McLaren-Honda at the moment and we just need to weigh all the other options up.
However, team chairman Niki Lauda insists such contracts can be broken.
"There are many contracts with small print and performance clauses," he told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper.
"It is now our duty to find these clauses among the drivers who are interested in us."
Maker it so. Let the fireworks and implosions begin at camp butthurtboy. I got popcorn ready.
Relinquishing your number one driver could potentially cost a team many millions of dollars when it ver likely means a lower ranking in the Constructors Championship. Why on earth would any team do that? Especially where holding on to your driver would mean some other team would likely suffer that fate and you might gain a place. It's primarily a money dance in my eyes.
