Former F1 driver David Coulthard says McLaren would have potential to win if they didn't have the underperforming Honda power unit in the back of the car.
Honda has massively struggled since their return to the grid in 2015 as a supplier to McLaren, with things seemingly going from bad to worse this season with multiple breakdowns throughout winter testing.
There have been some reports suggesting that McLaren is plotting to ditch the Japanese manufacturer and return to the efficient Mercedes unit which they ran with in 2014, however no hard evidence has come from it.
Coulthard, who spent nine years racing for McLaren pointed out that Red Bull won 4 championships as a customer team from 2010-2013, as former McLaren CEO Ron Dennis led the McLaren power unit switch to Honda in search of a championship.
"This situation is a result of the mantra expressed by Ron Dennis that to win a championship, you have to be aligned with a manufacturer," Coulthard told the Telegraph.
"Well, Red Bull have shown most recently that this need not be the case. They won four world titles as a customer. What you do need is a manufacturer that gives you winning engine potential," he added.
