Vandoorne not sure when Honda will fix issues

Stoffel Vandoorne is unsure how long it will take for Mclaren-Honda to figure out their problems and get on with a healthy and efficient relationship. Honda rejoined Formula 1 in 2015 as power unit suppliers to McLaren but the partnership has been a torrid one, leaving McLaren in the mid to lower pack of the field.

Many expected 2017 to be the year when Honda produced a decent engine and McLaren would be higher than they have been in the last two years, however it appears that the problems are worse than ever.

When asked how long it will take for a fix, Vandoorne answered: "It's too early to make predictions. But it's true that between the tests and the first race Honda already made progress. My car got to the finish and Fernando's almost did, although there is still much to be done.

"How much time will it take? I'm not sure but let's see what will happen. McLaren and Honda are doing everything possible, as quickly as possible to solve the problems and make the car faster."

McLaren has brought a radical T-Wing to China, but have been unable to test it due to the red flags that hindered Friday practice. Despite the struggles with the car, Vandoorne vows to put his heart into helping the team improve.

"For myself and Fernando [Alonso], in this situation, we will go all out and squeeze everything out of the car. Hopefully one day our efforts will be rewarded," he said.

  • If my memory serves me well, Fernando retired due to car damage, not engine malfunction, which is whatever. I dont know if Honda will become competitive, at least this year, but they have scheduled new upgrades within 2 months. Thats a long time though, and by that time a top 6 or even top 8 placement might be too far away. Its beyond me why Honda, an engine expert, should still have this much problem with their PU. Sakura is far from a dated base, they can develop good engines, hybrid PUs included, but why they are unable to successfully develop an F1 unit as of now is odd.

    • 3 years and Honda haven't gotten their sh!t together. I say F' em, it's high time to play irritation and distance so Honda goes out of this deal without a pay for breach of contract from Mclaren. The time for excuses and support is long over.
