Wehrlein: "Sauber atmosphere different after Kaltenborn departure"

Pascal Wehrlein has admitted that the atmosphere at Sauber has somewhat changed since Monisha Kaltenborn left the team. In the build up to the race in Baku two weeks ago, the team announced that Kaltenborn had been relieved of her duties after becoming team principal in 2012.

Despite the departure, Wehrlein is still trying to do the best job that he can: "We do not have a new team boss yet," he said in Austria. "It's different, especially without Monisha, but that's the way it is. I'm just trying to drive as fast as I can. It is something new, you can feel it in the team, but as in Baku we are trying to make the best of it."

With Wehrlein a Mercedes junior driver, his future will be decided by the front running team. Last season, Wehrlein made his debut for Manor who ran with Mercedes power. However, next year Sauber will run with Honda engines, which could prompt the team to bring in a Honda junior,

"I feel comfortable here and I've already got some points," Wehrlein said. "Compared to last year we have been able to take a step forward, but my future will be decided by Mercedes. They will say what will happen to me next year,"  he added

  • I hope he find a seat, but it looks grim.

I am struggling to with Wehrlein. I don't find him genuine. Would rather have someone else get into that seat. Maybe it was the way that he was got the DTM championship by Merc. Also the misdirections after the crash in Race of Champions.

I'd rather have Gio in there or an fast Honda development driver.

    • Yes, I didnt have a high opinion on him in DTM, looked like he got to win more due to Mercedes grace rather than pure pace, but I think he look quite impressive. I'd like to see him stay, but as you say, I also want Gio to get a shot. From the Honda camp I'd love to see Naoki Yamamoto get a shot, even if he is a bit too old for F1. Though they have quite a few promising drivers, so who knows.
