Marcus Ericsson has admitted that the 2018 engine deal between Sauber and Honda is in doubt. Sauber currently use one year old Ferrari engines in 2017, and signed a deal with Honda in April to become the Japanese car giant's first customer team. However, this deal has now reportedly been scrapped.
"To be honest, a lot has happened over the past few days," said Ericsson. "Frederic [Vasseur]'s first priority is to look into the matter." When asked if he would be happy using Honda power in 2018, the Swede replied: "If Honda is 100 per cent focused on success, then it's good for Sauber. Otherwise not.
I understand the question, but I don't really know what to think of it."
While Ericsson has been criticised for being too closely linked with Sauber's owners, Longbow Finance, new team boss, Frederic Vasseur said "The future of a team should not depend on a single driver. I will have the last word on the driver question in the future," when speaking to L'Equipe.
