Wehrlein expects big performance boost in Hungary

Pascal Wehrlein is expecting Sauber to deliver a lot more in performance next weekend in Hungary, as the team will be bringing a major update to the weekend. The team has struggled in the last number of races, finding themselves at the back of the field in most sessions.

Wehrlein has bagged the Swiss team points this year, with top 10 finishes in Spain and Azerbaijan. However, a major dip in form has seen drivers Marcus Ericsson and Wehrlein unable to challenge anyone else. The former Manor driver thinks the situation will pick up in Budapest where Sauber will introduce a big upgrade.

"For Budapest, we are set for a big upgrade," he told the official Formula 1 website. "Almost all the car – or all the aero side – will be new, so that should give us a good performance boost. "If what the data shows really can materialise we could be on a good go. So the plan is to [move past] the Silverstone weekend and look forward to Budapest!"

Wehrlein went on to say that there is a strong desire in the team to return to where it was five years ago, competing in the points in every race and even grabbing the odd podium: "First and foremost, the team wants to do better than we are doing now or did last season.

"So from now on we need ‘lucky races’. It is definitely a different situation now than it has been. The team wants to get back to where they were around five years ago. You can physically feel this desire in the team."

  • Hard to see a massive gain, probably just closer to the field
