Fernando Alonso wants Indy 500-style orange McLaren

Fernando Alonso has admitted he would like McLaren to adopt an all orange colour scheme in F1 this year. Last year, the Woking-based team revealed a brand new orange and black livery, after several hints of an orange livery were leaked.

Alonso contested the fabled Indy 500 instead of the Monaco and Prix, racing for a joint entry between Andretti, McLaren and Honda. The Spaniard raced with an all 'papaya' McLaren livery, and was in contention for victory before an engine failure forced him to retire

However, as for his 2018 livery, Alonso said: "I'm happy with any colour, but orange is part of the DNA of McLaren," Alonso is quoted by Speed Week. "So it would be nice if we saw an orange car like my Indycar," he admitted.

Alonso is heading into his seventeenth season of Formula 1 racing. Last weekend, he took part in the Daytona 24, a gruelling 24-hour race. However, he finished 38th overall after a number of issues hit his car, which was co-piloted by Lando Norris and Phil Hanson.

"It is a positive feeling despite the issues and reliability," Alonso said. "It was a very nice experience the whole event. ... The transition from night to day that was one of my stints was very nice to be on the track at that time. "I really enjoyed the traffic management [and] the car itself. The nicest thing was how competitive we felt."

I think he’s being very clever here if my theory is correct and that is that he already knows the colour scheme (it would be hard not to know at this stage) and when it does appear in the orange scheme, it looks as if the team bowed to his wishes. Or, do you think I’ve gone stir crazy over the winter?

Personally I doubt he knows the colour scheme. Keeping it a secret demands that you don't tell anybody you don't have to.

  • If that McLaren can fight for podiums or even wins, I will think it's beautiful, even if it looks like that horrific earth car from 2008 (RA-108)

I agree, the Papaya Orange is not F1, it’s more or less Bruce’s CanAm colour. McLaren’s F1 ‘heritage’ colours have to be red & white (Marlborough) or even silver (West) although obviously that’s been nailed by Mercedes. No, red & white it is.
