New Hamilton deal "only a matter of time"

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff says that it is only a matter of time before Lewis Hamilton pens a new deal with the Silver Arrows. The Brit's current contract expires at the end of the 2018 season, as does the deal of teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 and has since won three world championship with the German squad. Wolff doesn't think there will be any problems getting Hamilton to sign on again despite lingering question marks over the future of the 33-year-old.

"Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team,” Wolff stated. "It is a no-brainer that we continue with each other. The discussions are ongoing and with a very positive mind-set. It is just a matter of time, when we seal it and put the signature to the document."

Mercedes enjoyed three years of dominance when F1 entered its hybrid era in 2014. However, it came under pressure in 2017 from Ferrari who resurged to fight for the title. With the 2018 season just around the corner, Wolff says the mood in the camp is positive.

"The mood is good, it's especially good because today we will be firing up the car for the first time," the Austrian commented. "What has been designed is coming together, and is coming alive.

"It never goes seamlessly or smoothly because you're trying to push the boundaries, making the car as light as possible and as quick as possible. We've had a good winter, I would say, no real drama – but there is always stress at this time of year."

Sometimes I wonder if he would have won in another team that wasn't powered by Mercedes. Its one of the footnotes in his career. Off course he will sign for Mercedes but it's uninspiring and dull.

    • Agreed and dear gods it's getting very boring now. I'd love to see him in another team or Merc not head and shoulders above all the others, really see Lewis battling, as watching him out front is dull dull dull.
