Fernando Alonso has praised McLaren's Barcelona upgrades, stating that they are "a step forward". McLaren arrived in the Spanish paddock with a variety of upgrades, which most notably contained an upgraded and striking front wing.

The Woking-based team has struggled in qualifying so far in 2018, as it is yet to make an appearance in Q3. However, both Alonso and teammate Stoffel Vandoorne have collected 36 points in the opening four races, with McLaren sitting in fourth in the constructor's standings.

And Alonso was confident with the new package, saying: "It was a step forward. From the inside I think there was more performance in the car, I felt better. I felt more grip," the double-world champion said.

"I think the conditions were tricky today with the wind and the hot temperatures but I felt the car better so definitely a step forward. We will see tomorrow how much we will improve compared to the others. Overall I think we are a little bit more competitive than any other Friday, so hopefully Q3 tomorrow for the first time is a real possibility, let’s try to maximise that."

Alonso has qualified 13th, and finished the race 7th the last 3 races. So if he makes into q3 and gains in the race as per usual.... a podium maybe? (Wishful thinking)

    • If he can get past Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull? Nah, I aint seein' it. Alonso is whats making the difference in that car, and he can only do so much, even on a track well suited for it.

Well it hinges on the top 3 making mistakes, which they have done so far. Farrari gambling with Räikkönen, and Max crashing.

    • Yeah, but thats 2 out of 6, and its a big IF. And even then, 'nando is sandwiched between 2 Haas cars, and those arent too shabby when they arent disintegrating.
