Alonso watched Indy 500 with 'numb' F1 fans

Fernando Alonso says one of the best things about Monaco GP race day was watching the Indy 500 afterwards.

The Spaniard therefore joined the ranks of people critical of the questionable spectacle of Sunday's race in the Principality.

"At least it (watching the Indy 500) was fun, especially because the people who watched this race were a bit numb," said Alonso.

Alonso skipped Monaco to do the Indy 500 last year but says his return to the fabled streets was "extremely boring".

"It was probably the most boring race in the history of F1," he told Spanish reporters.

"The sport has to think about the show I think, because we all just followed the car in front.

"Maybe we should give the fans some compensation for paying for a ticket," Alonso added.

The 36-year-old was also upset about McLaren's pace in Monaco, as another Renault-powered car - Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull - sped ahead and dominated the weekend.

"The pace of Red Bull was disappointing," Alonso said.

"Disappointing for us. We use the same engine as them. They are our yardstick and in an ideal world, we should be on par with them.

"But we know what levers to pull to make the McLaren faster," he added.

A rather boring race yes, would be great with at least 1 longer straight to make overtaking possible

Maybe skip the chicane after the tunnel?

I thought that today the only point to overtake is the chicane, so taking it out, I don't know...
What's more, it won't make the track any wider, and with the current aero, outbreaking another car is much more difficult at high then at low speeds. So instead of removing the chicane I would say add a few more points where cars can outbreak each other. The top speed is not relevant in Monaco anyway.

Yeah maybe you are right. I was just thinking; longer straight = more time to carch up and pass the car in front

I thought the same thing, remove the chicane and maybe add a second DRS zone after the tunnel turn.

  • Monaco was almost always the same - a traffic race without many overtakings but this race is over there since so many years that I would like to keep it. I remember watching 1992, I will never forget the feelings I had watching Senna keeping Mansell behind.

McLaren needs to work harder since it is obvious their car isn't that great as they thought last year blaming the engine. Fernando should try to go somewhere else giving place for Lando.

Make it a rain race. Let sprinklers or firemen flood the streets.

  • Alonso should compensate all F1 fans for his 2008 fraud in Singapore first.

  • Not sure why all these whining from Alonso. What the hell is he asking for? Eliminating Monaco? Bringing some of the bullshit gimmicks Americans bring to races? Indy is a great race, but let's not forget for a second that it's a damn oval. It's great because of tradition and because it's very long. But he's comparing Indy's best race with F1's worst race in terms of overtaking. I'm just saying if you're gonna whine this much at least make a suggestion. Otherwise you risk sounding like a bitch.

    • Its the usual thing from him whenever he feels down. Its the saem as with Hammy. When it doesnt specifically work out for them things need to be changed.

I have to agree with Alonso on this one - Monaco has no place in the sport unless it can be a race. The race was won (Ricci said it !) on Saturday. It's a little pathetic looking back and quoting the Mansell Senna breathtaking 'race' - even Mansell couldn't overtake Senna in a much slower car back then. Monaco is something different, it even has a fashion show there for the drivers, the grid girls are back (not a bad thing) - its just not a RACE and F1 should be embarrassed it is still held there every year. Ive said it many times over the years, it should be scrapped or used as a promo weekend for the reserve drivers - but stop kidding ourselves it warrants a place on the map - piss poor. I would like to understand what the rationale is for keeping the event on the calendar, I think it has to be the only race that more important to its host than to any of the teams/drivers taking part?
