Felipe Massa has admitted that he was upset by Lance Stroll's comments regarding that he had received no guidance from the Brazilian during his rookie season. The Canadian made the comments earlier this year, after the 37-year-old left Williams.
"I don’t think I had any guidance from him last year, whatsoever," he said in February. "He was a teammate like any other. He was busy trying to drive as fast as he could, and I was trying to drive as fast as I could. That was it. There was nothing more to it than that."
Massa and Stroll partnered each other during the 2017 season, with Massa returning from his shrot-lived retirement. Williams brought him back to have an experienced racer alongside Stroll, who was entering his maiden year in F1.
Massa, who entered 272 Grands Prix in his career, admitted that he was left upset following Stroll's statement: "I did a lot for him, with all humility,” Massa said. "When I first met him, he was 7 years old, so it was a pleasure for me to be with him, trying to help him.
"He came in with great difficulty to have the speed, to understand an F1 car, to understand how the tyres work, as he was 18 years old. I was very close to him, I talked a lot, I tried to help in things that I have never seen a driver [try to help].
"Not even Schumacher, who was a master for me, did for me what I tried to do for him. So, I was upset because it was not what I imagined. But there's no problem."
Stroll blames his lack of talent on anyone but himself. Maybe he can get daddy to buy him some.
It was a stupid and immaculate comment. But although not a fan of Stroll, I take this for what it is. Stroll was pushing back on the notion that he was without talent, that he didn't belong. My opinion on Stroll has evolved. I think he was a year or two too early, but I think he does have talent. He's just so inconsistent and that's the sort of thing that comes with experience (among other things). To further complicate things, Stroll has no experienced driver as a reference and the car is a dog.
