Perez fears the loss of the Mexican GP

Sergio Perez has fears that Mexico will soon drop off the Formula 1 calendar after the Mexican government cut its funding.

Its place on the 2019 calendar will not be affected, however, its contract expires after the event later this year. The race has been a major success for organisers, with sellout crowds flocking to the race since it rejoined the calendar in 2015.

The race was not held between 1993 and 2014, and Perez believes that his country will have to wait even longer to get back on the calendar should it drop off after 2019.

"It's a fantastic venue for Formula 1 and for our country especially," Perez said. "I really hope that we can keep it costs us so much to get a place and now if we lose a place, I think that will probably be the end, and we'' have to wait another 30 to 50 years to get it back.

"It's great exposure for your country to have a Grand Prix so it would be a real shame if we lose the Mexican Grand Prix.

"I really hope that we can get some good news later on, it's very important for our country to keep a place for Formula 1. The last four races, they have been the best, it has been a great venue. There are so many countries out there that want a Grand Prix, so once you lose your venue, it's very hard to get it back.

"I'm in contact with the organisers, more as a Mexican. I really want my country to be seen all around the world, to show how good Mexico is and I think F1 is what offers you [to the world].

  • I for one would not miss this event - its a shame for Mexico but parts of this track arn't racing Im afraid, its a bit Mickey Mouse. I like Perez a lot and I love Mexico - but I think they have much bigger issues to contend with at the moment - so won't be a bad thing to focus on them and then maybe return in the future with a track that's a better test of driver's skill.

    • I'd agree to some extent, however I think that is in part due to how recent this addition is. It hasn't really been able to cement itself as a vital part of the calendar the same way as Silverstone, Suzuka or Monza.
