Eric Boullier has returned to Formula 1, taking on his first role since leaving McLaren midway through the 2018 season.

Boullier will work the French Grand Prix as an ambassador for the race, as well as handling the duties of sport and operational strategic advisor.

“I am happy and proud to have the opportunity to collaborate again with the French Grand Prix organisation. I attach particular importance to the French Grand Prix and I look forward to contributing to the success of this major motor sport event,” he said.

Boullier left his role at McLaren last year as the team struggle through a difficult 2018 campaign. It is understood that Boullier was subject to a six-month restriction on taking on roles from F1 teams, FOM or the FIA.

Boullier joined F1 in 2010 with Renault, staying on when it became Lotus in 2012.  The Frenchman joined McLaren in 2014, overseeing a difficult period for the Woking squad before he opted to leave his role last year.

  • His tenure at the McHonda was an absolute low point. I wish, he comes back strong with a decent role in F1.

  • But, logistically for the audience at least, the French Grand Prix was already a disaster. Are they looking to do even worse this year?
