Rio de Janeiro has admitted interest in bringing the Brazilian Grand Prix back its city and replace the event at Sao Paolo.
Rio has held the Brazil race before, last doing so in 1989 at the Jacarepagua circuit. Interlagos has been on the calendar every year since 1990, and in recent years has hosted exciting title finales, including 2008 and 2012.
But Wilson Witzel, the Governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, has indicated his intent on bringing the race back to the east coast of the country.
"I was honoured to receive the letter from Sean Bratches, director of commercial operations of F1, who showed interest in bringing the Brazil GP to RJ," he wrote on social media.
"I have been talking for some time about the design of the track in Deodoro. We will work hard for F1 to return to our RJ."
F1's CEO Chase Carey visited Rio de Janeiro last year to explore the option and meet Witzel, who had been elected but hadn't yet taken up his spot in office.
Deodoro, the venue in question is a military base that has been used for some other sporting events including hockey, rugby sevens, shooting, BMX, mountain biking, show jumping and the modern pentathlon.
However, efforts to develop a race track are complicated by movements to make Deodoro an environmental protection area.
